Note: There will be a $5 cover charge for this event. All proceeds go to contest winners and judges.
Hey, do you remember the 80s? Or, at least, do you remember watching Remember the 80s? How well do you know your 80s music?
Come show us at the First Annual World Championship 80s Karaoke Battle! Sing us your best 80s tune and our judges and audience just might reward you with the championship!
There are only 10 competition spots available for this event, so sign up quickly! You will perform one song in the first round and if you advance, one other song, so you are highly encouraged to bring costumes, props, guest performers, etc.
There will be open karaoke from 7-8, then the event will take place, with more open karaoke after the event! This should be tons of fun!
Here's how it works:
All songs performed in the competition must be from the 1980s. Any song that was on the charts between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 1989 is eligible!
In round one, up to 10 contestants will be allowed to enter. There is a $5 entry fee to perform. Each will perform one song. And the end of the round, judges will vote for three performers to advance to the final round. The three performers with the highest number of votes will advance to the final round.
If there is a tie that would send more than three performers to round 2, then all of those with the tie will advance.
In the final round, each contestant will perform a new song. At the end of the round, the audience will vote for the winner out of the final round performers, based on loudness, with the KJ being the judge on who had the most support.
Each judge will vote to advance people to the next round based solely on their category. No other aspects will be taken into account for that judge. Judges must vote in round one up to five performers to advance to the final round.
The specific judges will be announced soon!
The four judges are:
1. Vocals: How well does the performer vocally sing the song.
2. Stage Presence: How good is the performer's stage presence and audience interaction.
3. Technical: How well does the performer say the words of the song correctly (or how well does their parody song make sense, linguistically). Also, this judge will determine whether or not your song is actually an 80s song.
4. Extras: Which performers brought something extra to the performance, including props, costumes, guests, alternate lyrics and other additions to the performance that go beyond the first three categories. Chances are, you won't advance without bringing something extra.
To participate, you should contact Kenneth Quinnell/Professor Rex to submit your first round song and your $5 entry fee. Your spot is not officially held until RevEx officially receives your entry fee. Payments will be accepted at the door but to ensure a spot and your preferred song choice, payments made in advance will be given priority.
Our full song list can be found at http://quinnell.us/karaoke.htm
. Send us a message if you don’t find your song. If a song is not currently on our list, it may possible to obtain it before the event. The performer is 100% responsible for making sure that we have any alternate tracks before the start of the event. If we do not have the file and you don’t bring it, you can’t use it. It may be possible to use songs off of YouTube, depending on the venue and Internet connection. There is no guarantee that you can use YouTube or any alternative files.
-No songs may be repeated in the contest, whether you performed it or someone else did. Song choices are registered on a first-come, first-serve basis by round. Only first rounds songs will be submitted in advance.
-You are required to use the karaoke file that the KJ has during the event (unless you bring your own file and give it to the KJ before the start of the event). No substitutions after the beginning of the show and you need to check out the file in advance of the event date to request a change to the file. If you discover that you don't like the file during the contest, you cannot change at that point.
-No bribing of judges. Any attempt to bribe a judge results in automatic disqualification.
-Performers may include costumes and props, but set-up time can be no longer than one minute once you have been called to the stage and clean-up, leaving the stage exactly as you found it, should be completed within a minute of the end of your performance. No props that can cause a mess that might possibly take longer than a minute to clean up will be allowed, which includes liquids, glitter, confetti, outside food, etc.
-Performers may include one or more guests in their performance, as long as those guests are not participants in the battle or have been eliminated before the current round.
-If a song does not qualify as being 80s, the technical judge should NOT vote for that performer to advance to the final. There are no appeals allowed from other performers or audience members. The technical judge has final say.
-We are an inclusive and equality-oriented space. So choose wisely, not just in terms of artists/songs, but in terms of what you choose to say on stage. If you fail to keep this in mind, you aren't going to win and you aren't likely to be invited back for future events.
There will be prizes for the winners and runner-ups! The entry fees will create a pool that will go to the best performers. We will have more announcements later closer to the battle.
That’s it! Bring your best 80s song, costumes and props, and we’ll see you there!
