We are excited to announce that this year's Founders Day Ball will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.
The annual Founders Day Ball is an event hosted by Student Government. It is centered around the University's founding, which was approved by President Benjamin Harrison on February 24, 1893. Today, the University continues to expand with over 7,000 undergraduate students and over 115,000 living alumni. This year marks 126 years since our charter's approval.
Thank you to our co-sponsors for making this event happen: The Residence Hall Association, The Graduate Leadership Council, the Student Media Board, and the American University Club Council.
Due to the high demand for tickets to #AUFounders19
, this event is open only to current AU students and each AU student may only reserve one ticket. Again: ONLY CURRENT AU STUDENTS CAN ATTEND, NO OUTSIDE GUESTS. All students must present their printed ticket and valid American University ID upon entry. If you no longer wish to attend Founders Day after reserving your ticket, please email Emma Galasso at [email protected]
and your ticket will be added to the waitlist.
This year’s ticketing will be completed through the online Eventbrite website. In an effort to distribute tickets fairly, each class (ie: Senior, Junior, Sophomore, Freshmen) will be able to access tickets at specific times with unique promo codes – your year is determined by the amount of completed credits. Each student is permitted one ticket only and must be secured with the correct promo code to enter the event. After all tickets have been distributed, a waitlist will be established for returned tickets.
More information on ticketing will be available soon-- check back often and ensure you're receiving AUSG emails!
As in years past, the Dean’s Office has informed us that conduct charges may be brought against anyone found trying to sell or trade Founders Day tickets.
American University is committed to providing accessible programs and services. Barrier-free access is available at the 2019 Founders Day Ball and all interior areas are elevator-accessible. For accommodations, contact [email protected]

1. Remind me of the basic event details.
2019 Founders Day Ball, Saturday, February 23, 2019 from 7:00pm to 11:00pm at the National Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center.
2. How does one attend the 2019 Founders Day Ball?
Tickets will be distributed through scheduled ticketing times on Eventbrite. Students can access this link at anytime during the ticketing process, but tickets will only be distributed at the designated times. To attend the event, you MUST have your printed ticket with the correct corresponding AU student ID. There is no re-entry during the event.
3. Why promo codes?
As much as we want all 7,000+ undergraduate students at this event, there simply isn’t enough room for everyone. In an effort to get an equal representation of undergraduate students, we have decided to distribute a set amount of tickets to each class at different times.
4. What are the specific promo codes, and can I use one that isn’t for my class?
Promo codes will be distributed to each class (Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior, Senior) prior to their ticketing times. To secure a ticket, you must use the correct promo code. Ticket “orders” with promo codes will be checked against your student ID. Those using the wrong promo code will immediately forfeit their ticket to the waitlist.
5. Wait… what year am I?
Your year is determined by your credits — we double check this on our end. If you are unsure, check your Degree Audit Report.
6. Can I sell my ticket?
Tickets CANNOT be sold for any reason. Again, all student IDs will be checked at the door with printed tickets. We will also be checking the system for duplicates, so anyone who gets more than one ticket will automatically forfeit their ticket back onto the waitlist. The Dean’s Office has informed us that conduct charges may be brought against anyone found trying to sell or trade Founders Day tickets.
7. Can I give my ticket to a friend if I don’t want to go?
While you are unable to transfer a ticket to a friend, we appreciate when those who can no longer attend give their tickets back! All returned tickets will be distributed to those on the waitlist. If you would like to return your ticket, please email [email protected]
8. What’s the deal with this waitlist?
After ticketing is completed, we will open a waitlist to all undergraduate students. The waitlist is first come, first serve. All those trying to get onto the waitlist will fill out a form with their information. Those on the waitlist will receive tickets as they become available.
9. How do I get to the 2019 Founders Day Ball?
Professional bus transportation will be provided for all those attending. Buses will leave from a designated spot on campus and will return to campus following the event. A bus schedule will be released closer to the event.
10. Do I have to take the free busses?
No – while students are encouraged to use the buses, they are not required. There is also a Lyft code that students may use for 25% off their ride. Use the code: AUFOUNDERS19 to get your discount. There is also free-parking at the venue, if you choose to drive your own car. Please make sure to travel safely!
11. What does one wear to a “formal event”?
The event is cocktail attire. Think prom or a fun wedding!
12. Will there be food?
There will be light appetizers, desserts, and beverages served at the event. Food options are inclusive to most dietary restrictions, especially those gluten-free or vegetarian + vegan.
13. What about alcohol?
There will be no alcohol SERVED AND/OR PERMITTED at the event.
14. What can I bring to the event?
Due to venue regulations, attendees may not bring large bags, backpacks, parcels, etc. Small purses are allowed, however please be mindful that all bags must be checked before entering the venue and bringing bags may slow down the check-in process. There will be a complimentary coat check at the venue.
15. Is the venue handicap accessible?
Yes – the 2019 Founders Day Ball features handicap accessible ramps and elevators and follows all ADA Regulations. All buses from American University will drop off in front of a handicap accessible entrance. If you need wheelchair accommodations and plan on taking the bus, please email [email protected]
or [email protected]
by Friday, February 15 with your request for accommodation.
16. What if the weather is terrible?
If severe weather conditions arise, the event will operate in accordance to venue policies.
