Marie Antoinette and Swedish soldier Hans Axel von Fersen met each other at a lavish masquerade ball in Paris on January 30, 1771. She was still the Dauphine and not yet the queen and Fersen’s military career had just begun. At the ball, Marie Antoinette and Axel von Fersen took off their masks and talked to each other and that meeting began their friendship and love affair, which lasted for more than 20 years. Magical (and scandalous) encounters often happen at masquerade balls.
Like most functions which break barriers of class, gender, and ethnicity by challenging social norms, the eighteenth-century masquerade had strong and vocal opponents. As a result of these public outcries, the masquerades were forbidden to take place.
